poem

(some loose inspiration from ee cummings in this...it actually *is* based on a dream i had)

I dreamed it was midnight
(the star a gasping expanse of bottomless
abyssful starry black shining darkly with

I was walking along the top row of a set of monstrous bleachers near
a field that contained a behemoth of a roller coaster—
no really—larger than

and I saw how easy it would be, how
perfectly trivial,
to grab hold of an overhanging track, only about four feet
away really, and hoist myself up
onto the beast

The roller coaster was quite
 a loopy, stomach-turning device—it must
have been quite a thrilling thing to ride
when operational.
Once fully aboard, I found I could ride it
without a car—just by holding on
with my hands (for dear life, of course—

how exhilarating!) The sky soared
past me, dipped under me,
the field became a lighted pool of water
into which I dove with the
twists of the ride—most
surprising. I laughed with joy—
and to get the water out of my lungs—
and a little bit of fear.

I noticed, as I was coming up out of
the water, that the track
overhung, swung dangerously near
some train tracks, and that as I was coming
upon that bit, the yellow
lights of a titanic train shown
predatorily, like a hungry

in the dark distance.
I clung like death to my roller coaster track,

and as the train and I converged
(vibrating the roller coaster track as it made the tracks
beneath it vibrate), I watched it pass under me, breathless,
gasping, nearly close enough to
